Our AMA chartered club was founded in 1991 by a group of Model Aeronautics enthusiasts, who placed a strong emphasis on educating the public, especially children, to appreciate all aspects of this rewarding hobby. Until the end of 2016 we used an airstrip along the shores of Jordan Lake, thanks to an agreement with the NC Forest Service. Due to a change in the management of the area, we had to find a new location. The developers of Chatham Park came to our rescue, and gave us the use of a property located a few minutes south of Pittsboro, North Carolina, not far from our old Jordan Lake location. The new field has two separate flight areas: one for fixed-wing craft (~550' runway) and one for rotary-wing craft. We are currently working on grading the runway and clearing the area for parking and pits, with an expected completion date of mid May. In the meanwhile, it is possible to fly rotary wing and small planes that can be hand launched.
Over the years, the club has remained faithful to the vision of the founders, thanks to a dedicated cadre of instructors who have taught, free of charge, hundreds of aspiring pilots of all ages.
In the last few years, we have experienced a tremendous growth phase, spurred by technological advances that have made the hobby more affordable, giving the opportunity to learn about aviation to a more diverse group of people, but no less demanding, than ever.
Our members range in age from 10 to 80s and reflect the demographic diversity of the Triangle Area. This diversity is also reflected in what we fly: From tiny electric models that weigh just a few ounces, to scale warbirds, and soaring gliders . . . we fly them all. So come and check us out. Enjoy the thrills and educational value of model aviation, you will not be disappointed!
